- The starch is needed to thicken buttercream frosting. If you're just using the icing sugar for dusting over a cake or say some french toast, you don't NEED to add any starch at all but it won't do any harm
- To make icing glaze, mix 225g of the powdered sugar with 2 - 3 tbsp water until smooth. You can add a drop of flavouring first then add the water. Beat until smooth adding drops of water as required to reach the consistency you want. That'll cover an 8" cake or 1/2 cupcakes
- To make buttercream, add 75g softened butter to 175g of the powdered sugar and beat until creamed. Add a little milk again to reach the consistency you want. That'll fill or cover an 8" cake or 1/2 cupcakes too
Transform this powdered sugar glaze by adding a little coconut, almond or any of your other favorite flavored extracts. For a richer icing, add a tablespoon of butter extract to the glaze. It's sweet and buttery rich and hardens so cookies are stackable! Add remaining icing ingredients (confectioners sugar, water and vanilla) and whisk until. You may know this sugar as confectioner's sugar or icing sugar, but I grew up calling it "powdered sugar." My grandmother makes the best frosting with Powdered sugar has a not-so-great reputation because it's typically made out of refined sugar, which is then mixed with corn starch to prevent caking.
