Here is my way of kappa puzhukku preparation with my all time favorite combo "Kappayum Neymeen mulaku Curryum" (mashed tapioca with spicy king fish curry). Kappa / kizhangu puzhukk recipe in presure cokker. This is the simple way to prepare kappa recipe in very little of time.
To begin with this particular recipe, we must first prepare a few ingredients. You can have kappa (tapioca) puzhukku using 7 ingredients and 12 steps. Here is how you can achieve it.
The ingredients needed to make Kappa (Tapioca) Puzhukku:
- Get 2 Tapioca -
- Make ready 1/2 cup coconut Grated -
- Prepare 1 tsp Cumin seed -
- Get 2 to 3 chillies red -
- Make ready 1/2 tsp mustard seed -
- Prepare 1/2 tsp Turmeric -
- Get Curry leaves - some
Kappa Puzhukku-Kappa Vevichathu is boiled and mashed Tapioca-Yuca-Cassava seasoned with spice mixture and ground coconut served with fish curry or dried red chilli chutney. Kerala special Tapioca(Kappa) or Jackfruit(Chakka) curry. Kappa (tapioca) used to be considered as poor man's food. It was a good starchy substitute for rice for those who cant afford rice.
Instructions to make Kappa (Tapioca) Puzhukku:
- Wash the tapioca very well in water to remove the soil.
- Cut the head and tail of the tapioca & cut into small logs. The length of the log could be the length of your index finger. You can see a fine outer skin in the vegetable. You will need to remove that.
- Once removed, wash well again in water. Cut into small cubes and make sure to remove the inner root, if any exists.
- Add turmeric & salt to taste into the cooker. Add the cut cubes, and fill the water to cover the cubes.
- Pressure cook for 4 - 5 whistles.
- Once the pressure subsides, mash the tapioca. Dont overmash it. I like small cubes of tapioca. So i mash 2 - 3 times
- Add a little oil into a kadai, and explode mustard seeds, and curry leaves.
- Add the mashed tapioca into the kadai.
- Put grated coconut, red chillies, cumin seeds & a little water into a mixie & grind well.
- Add the coconut mix into the kadai. Stir well.
- Add water if necessary. I like it a little gooey gooey, so i add according to the gooeyness.
- Serve with kanji/ eat it alone :)
But over a period of time, it got transformed from poor man's staple to an. When the shallots turn brown, ith tapioca. Kappa puzhukku mainly goes with fish curry but you can make a spicy dip as accompaniment by simply mixing red chilly powder with some salt and oil.
